About Us
Purnam Practice Labs is being developed by Purnam Centre for Integrality, an educational unit of Auroville Foundation, Tamil Nadu, India. The Auroville Foundation is an institution of higher education under the Ministry of Education, UNESCO category, Government of India. (https://www.education.gov.in/en/unesco)
Purnam's work unfolds in the intersection of three areas:
- 1. Integral Education
- 2. Integral Psychology
- 3. Integral Yoga
All the three domains are based on the integral paradigm of Sri Aurobindo (1872 - 1950) an Indian yogi, sage, seer, poet, philosopher, educationist, psychologist and pioneer of freedom movement in India. The integral paradigm was developed by Sri Aurobindo over six decades of first person research following yogic methodology mapping the whole spectrum of consciousness and its process of evolution on earth.
The task of giving a concrete form to Sri Aurobindo's vision was entrusted to Mirra Alfassa (1878 - 1973), his spiritual collaborator affectionately called the Mother. The creation of a new world, a new humanity, a new society expressing and embodying the new consciousness is the work she has undertaken. By the very nature of things, it is a collective ideal that calls for a collective effort so that it may be realised in the terms of an integral human perfection.
In 1968 the Mother founded Auroville, a live-in laboratory of consciousness envisioned as a city for 50,000 people where the full complexity of life is embraced and taken up as a field of transformation based on Sri Aurobindo's vision. Auroville has been endorsed by UNESCO and Government of India as an ongoing experiment in human unity. The Auroville Foundation was established in 1988 by an Act of Parliament of the Government of India.
Over the years, Auroville has attracted seekers from around the world, diverse in nature but united by a quest for higher living. Over 3200 people from 60 nations have made it their permanent home nurturing it with their love, hope, challenges, and labor. The seeds of hope and labor and diversity are now maturing into a robust life ecosystem, not free of all problems but with many creative alternatives. Looking at this development, not in terms of boring metrics, but in terms of evolving individuals and society, the regenerative culture of Auroville has enabled it to accumulate a tremendous amount of wealth to share with the world. This small forest city has all the elements of a terrific futuristic campus with practitioner mentors, learning labs, and the most integral learning framework in place that seeks a simultaneous perfection in human and material evolution.
During 2012 Auroville Campus Initiative (ACI) was formed envisioning Aurville as a live-in campus and the flagship course Swadharma was launched in 2016 for the youth of the world. This was followed by other courses like Svadhyaya and Savitri Painting and over the years a thriving community of practitioners emerged. This naturally led to the emergence of focused practice groups where people with shared interests came together to create their own learning journeys. All this has now been consolidated as Purnam Centre for Integrality, a formal unit of Auroville Foundation dedicated to the integral approach of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
